Lightweight Expeditionary Airfield Surfaces
Expeditionary airfield matting systems are lightweight, portable runway and taxiway surfaces that enable the rapid deployment of infrastructure to support aircraft operations in austere locations. New matting systems have been designed and investigated using multi-scale material modeling. Results of the study reveal an inherent coupling between load transfer, matting deflection, and near-surface subgrade deformation with dependence on tire location, mat core shear flexibility, and joint stiffness.
